Meet Theresa Carter
Where I came from…
I am a born and raised Island girl who grew up on a 42ft schooner, built by my Father. I settled in the Cowichan Valley in 1994 and I now like to remind everyone that we truly live in the most beautiful place on earth.
I worked in the bar and restaurant industry for many years, but I eventually found myself searching for a job with more reasonable hours (though I may have missed the mark by a bit there). I was hired by a top local Realtor as an administrative assistant for his team. I enjoyed the fast-paced environment of the office and all the knowledge I acquired while working there. After a few years, I began to find I didn’t feel a challenge anymore. I decided to get my real estate license.
How I feel about my career choice…
I love working with people. I love people in general. I am very appreciative of the diversity and contrasting perspectives each person’s unique blend brings to our daily lives. Everyone has their own interesting story and I have much gratitude when people share a piece of their story with me or I get to be a part of it. Real Estate is all about people and, being a good Realtor is all about understanding people, truly listening to them and, assisting them in making some of the biggest decisions in their lives.
It can be an exceptionally challenging occupation. You have to be ON nearly all the time, frequently glued to your phone or laptop, no matter what else may be happening in your own life. You need to be the calm voice of reason in the face of many adverse situations where emotions and stresses are heightened. You need to regularly possess counsellor like qualities to aid your clients in making the best decisions possible for themselves to get what they want, all while continuously going to bat for them.
However, it’s certainly not thankless! No day is the same as the last in Real Estate, and it’s never dull or mundane. I have the privilege of meeting a lot of amazing people and seeing many incredible homes and properties. Above all, I am afforded the opportunity to be a part of helping people transition through various milestones in the different stages of their lives and that’s…well, it’s pretty awesome.
When I am not working… (Which if you ask those who know me, is almost never)
I enjoy living life as much as and, as fully as possible. Anything to do with water; in it, on it, beside it, in that order. Everything outside; camping, hiking, snowboarding, sunshine! Travel; anywhere and everywhere, I have a bucket list. Flavour; incredible food, fine wine, great scotch. And of course, the little and the big moments with my friends and family.
